The trick to closing your pool is closing your pool before the leaves start to fall. Plan to close your pool when the night time temps start to dip consistently into the 40’s and the daytime temps are not reaching 60 Degrees F any more. If you start too early you will risk an algae growth which can really be a headache. But if you wait too long, you will find your self pulling soggy leaves out of your pool in which also cause an algae problem in the spring. Of course, you could always get a pool heater and a winter dome and extend your season into the holidays, but if that seems like too much work and you are ready to close down for the season – follow these tips to close your pool properly:
Drain pool water below skimmer and blow out the lines with some kind of shop vacuum
Plug the return line with stopper
Drain the filter of water
Inspect the filter unit for any kind of wear or tear, take a look at the media, and think about replacing the cartridge, sand or de every three years or when you can’t keep the pool clean any more
Disconnect the pump & filter unit and store if possible in a dry warm place to prevent freezing or damage to the filter.
Get out the winter cover, water bags, and air pillows.
Roll the cover out over the pool and secure
Apply winter closing kit.
Its recommend to pump the excess water, leaves and debris off the cover throughout the winter.
Drain any pool heater and cover it.
