Swimming Pool Pumps

Pool Supply World Pool Pumps

Your swimming pool pump is what keeps your water moving and circulating, without your pool pump your water would turn green. A pool pump is a device that works with your filter to maintain your pool crystal clear look. Your swimming pool pump extracts water from the pool and circulates it through the filtration system, which allows it to be cleaned of bacteria, dirt and debris. Pumps come standard in single speed but can come in dual speed, as well as variable speeds, energy efficient, and non energy efficient.

We carry swimming pool pumps from all the major manufactures, Pentair, Hayward, Sta Rite, and Jandy. We carry both above ground pool pumps as well as in ground pool pumps.

Additional Pool Pumps Information

Most pumps are self-priming centrifugal pumps. These pumps must have a vacuum chamber, commonly known as a pump housing. The pump housing must be filled with water in order for any pump to create a vacuum, resulting in your pump pulling the water out of your pool or spa. The pump housing will remain full of water while the pump is on, and will remain full or partially full of water when the pump is shut off.

Self-priming can only occur when the pump has a diffuser. Some pumps have a separate diffuser, others have the diffuser molded into the pump’s cover. The diffuser helps to eliminate any air coming into the pump housing, suction piping, or hoses on above ground pools. When all the air is being removed from the system, you will notice the bubbles returning to the pool through the return fittings. The impeller acts to convert water velocity into water pressure, which is registered on your filter pressure gauge. The actual Gallons Per Minute (GPM) varies with the type of pump and the horsepower.

Self-priming pumps are very dependable and simple in design. They require a sufficient supply of water from the pool or spa, and no air in the suction lines. Air could come from a loose strainer cover, a leak in any valve, a pin hole in any suction line or any crack or loose connections in the underground piping. Your pump should be kept free of dirt and also located where it can be protected from flooding during heavy rain fall.

Every pump has a capacity that lets you know how much water it can circulate. When buying a pump it is important to look at its circulation ability and see how much it can pump either by the minute or by the hour. A good basic rule of thumb is to ensure that the pump can circulate your pools entire water volume in around 8 hours (three times a day). It is important also to check the energy efficiency of the pump as well as the warranty stipulations to ensure you get the optimum power for your money.
