Replace Your Existing Illuminator with a SAVI Illuminator

Film director and art show curator Aaron Rose once said “In the right light at the right time, everything is extraordinary.” There is no better way to bring life and beauty to a swimming pool or spa than by enhancing the surrounding landscape. The SAVI illuminator SV150T6 from Next Step Products is a sophisticated, easy-to-install fiber optic accent lighting system that uses white or colored lighting to create a fantastic evening ambiance for you and your guests. In this blog, we’ll tell you why the SAVI illuminator is the ideal replacement for your old or existing illuminator. We’ll discuss its features, installation logistics, and product enhancements available from Next Step.

What are illuminators and how do they work?

Illuminators are essentially housing units for the power supply and lamp that provides light to fiber optic cables. The fiber is connected to the illuminator with a fiberhead. illuminators support the use of multi-stranded fiber optics or solid core fiber optics; the SAVI illuminator is a multi-stranded fiber optic system. On some models a color filter or color wheel with four to six colors is positioned between the fiber head and the lamp. The color wheel is connected to a motor that turns and changes the color at a predetermined rate. The SAVI illuminator SV150T6 is available in white or a six color wheel for the ultimate in beauty and design.

Technical Aspects of the SAVI illuminator SV150T6

The SAVI illuminator SV150T6 has a 550 fiber strand capacity. It is equipped with a powerful 150W, 120V Metal Halide lamp with a 14,000 lumen rating, graded for 3,000-4,000 more hours of life than both the Polaris AfterDark and Fiberstars. With a power consumption of up to 200 watts, the SAVI illuminator is designed to consume less energy while maintaining low operating costs.

Replacing an old illuminator with a SAVI

The SV150T6 illuminator is a compatible replacement for any 150W metal-halide multi-stranded fiber optic illuminator, including:

  • Fiberstars Metal-Halide illuminator 4-Position Color Wheel 450 Port Capacity – 6004
  • Polaris AfterDark Metal-Halide Light Driver, Color Wheel with 9 Colors – AD150 (discontinued)
  • Polaris AfterDark Metal-Halide Light Driver, White Color Only – AD151 (discontinued)

Design and installation

The SAVI illuminator’s design exhibits a sleek and modern appeal with a tower-shape frame, accommodating closer installation to surrounding landscapes and poolside features for increased brightness with a low profile . Its exterior is built with UV-stabilized weatherproof materials. The illuminator is totally waterproof and has a chemical resistant surface to prevent stains caused by pool or spa water splash.

The illuminator can be installed at surface level or buried depending on preference, and neither option will enhance or negatively impact operation. If the illuminator is installed at ground level, the base needs to be positioned in the ground with 2” remaining above the finished grade. This provides positive drainage away from the light source.

Additional products and enhancements

Two optional features available for the SAVI illuminator are the EndGlow and SideGlow, which offer a light display in six color variations including greens, blues, and pinks.

I had an older model fiber optic lighting system in my pool -in ground 22 X 12 freeform (I’m guessing an 1997 model). I now only have the fiber optic cable and the 120v power lines and the old base (no name/model # etc). Do you know what systems are available that would be compatible with what I have? Thanks, John Williams

Hi John, do you happen to know your fiber thread count? The Fiberstars Metal-Halide Illuminator 4-Position Color Wheel 450 Port Capacity would be a great replacement for your system, although it does have a max thread count of 450 strands. It includes a multi-color wheel for a selection of colorful hues, and like your older system, it requires 120V. Its metal-halide lamp has a lifespan of 6,000 hours, and it includes a base that would easily replace your existing base unit.
