Hello, I live in sacramento, Ca and am looking into a cost effective switch to a chlorine system. What are your thoughts on the solarchlor system for a 12,000 gallon above ground pool? Thank you

    • PoolSupplyWorld says:

Hi Lisa, the Splash SolarChlor Chlorine and Ion Generator is a great choice for your pool, and is an ideal way to save on energy costs with its solar powered performance. You will, however, want to consider using two of them because of your pool’s size, as one may not be enough to adequately sanitize your pool. Like traditional salt chlorinators, the SolarChlor unit employs self cleaning to reduce calcium build up, and it is fully adjustable to meet the chlorine demand of your pool.

If you’re interested in an in-line salt chlorinator, the Pentair IntelliChlor IC20 Complete Salt Chlorine Generator System with Cell and Power Center is another excellent option. It plumbs into 2″ PVC piping, and includes a control panel directly on the salt cell itself that allows for simple monitoring of your salt chlorinator. You can easily adjust the chlorine production of the IntelliChlor to ensure your pool’s chlorine needs are always met. Its titanium electrode cell blades also employ self-cleaning to prevent large amounts of calcium build up and to extend the cell’s lifespan.

We hope this offers some assistance. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us directly for immediate assistance.

I have 16.5k fiberglass in ground pool. I live in Northern Ca Valley-hot summers, cool winters, with hard water. We are often gone for a month in July, when it is the hardest to keep up the pool. What system ( Chlorinator Salt Systems) should I go with for best value?

    • PoolSupplyWorld says:

Hi Jim, to properly accommodate your 16,500 gallon pool and keep up with chlorine demand in the heat of July, even while you’re out of town, we would recommend a salt chlorine generator that can accommodate pools up to 40,000 gallons. The Pentair IntelliChlor IC40 Complete Salt Chlorine Generator System with Power Center is an ideal choice, and will allow you to dial back chlorine output when demand is low but increase it when demand increases due to factors including heat, direct sunlight and increased pool usage.

As long as it is properly maintained, installing a chlorinator that can accommodate 40,000 gallons will also help extend the longevity of your salt cell, as it will not have to work as hard to keep up with chlorine demand. We also recommend using Natural Chemistry Cell Protect, which is an eco-friendly product designed to help prevent calcium buildup on the cell plates and extend the life of your salt cell. If you have any further questions on the IC40 or other salt chlorinator systems, please feel free to contact us directly for immediate assistance.

I have a pool that is about 23,000 gal. Its 15 yrs old, I have had 3 different salt generators. 1st one was a Chloromatic, went through 3 cells, thier customer serves was the worst. My last two have been Zodiac products, first I had a 24 for my pool and went through 2 cells pretty quickly, was told to upgrade to a larger unit, which I did. Now with this unit I have replaced the cell, the cord from the cell to the base unit. And now it does not want to work correctly at all. I have talked to there service help and really got no help. So instead of ordering the same system and dealing with the same stuff, I am looking for a new and different product. I live in So cal and my waters ph is a constant battle, but can be contolled. Is there a system that has proven over time and won’t have me continuely dealing with service help.

  4. JJ says:

I just moved into a home with a pool and would like to convert it to salt. I’ll be draining the pool completely to perform some maintenance and a power clean. The pool is about 25k gallons and I live in Phoenix where hard water is a big problem. What would you suggest?

    • PoolSupplyWorld says:

Hi JJ, there are a number of steps you’ll need to do to convert your new pool to salt, including purchasing the proper equipment and maintenance products.

For a 25,000 gallon pool, especially in a warmer climate, such as Phoenix, we recommend using a salt chlorine generator designed for a 40,000 gallon pool, such as the Pentair IntelliChlor IC40. The reason we suggest this is because as temperatures rise, heat and direct sunlight can cause an increase in chlorine demand. Over-sizing a salt cell will help your salt chlorinator accommodate this increase, and will also mean it will not have to work at full capacity to produce the chlorine necessary to sanitize your pool. This alone can help extend the life of your salt cell.

When you’re ready to refill your pool, we recommend using the HydroPure METALTRAP 25, since you have hard water. METALTRAP is a filtration system that attaches directly to your garden hose and helps filter out metals associated with hard water. Once the pool is filled, you’ll need to add the proper amount of non-iodized salt, which you can buy in bulk at a local home goods or hardware store. Ideally, the salt level in a pool should be between 2,500 and 4,000 parts per million (PPM). 3,200 – 3,300 PPM is optimal, but upon start-up, you should aim to hit 4,000 PPM. For every 2,000 gallons of water, you will need 50 pounds of salt, so for your 25,000 gallon pool, you’ll need 625 pounds of salt.

Since you will have drained your pool, you shouldn’t have a problem with phosphates in your water, but we recommend using a Natural Chemistry Phosphate Test Kit to be certain, and testing phosphate levels on a regular basis after start-up. Phosphates are the food source for algae, but also act as glue for contaminants that can cause scale buildup on your salt cell. Phosphate levels should be as close to zero as possible, but levels below 100 – 125 parts per billion are safe. If you need to lower your phosphate level, Natural Chemistry PHOSfree 2L is a great product to do so.

If your pool’s phosphate levels are in check, go right into the next step, which is introducing a Natural Chemistry Salt Water Magic Monthly Kit to your pool. The Salt Water Magic Monthly Kit should be used upon start-up, and continuously again on a monthly basis. It consists of Natural Chemistry Liquid Salt Water Magic and Salt Water Magic Salt/Mineral Mix. Liquid Salt Water Magic adds an enzyme to your pool to take strain off your salt chlorine generator by breaking down organic contaminants on a regular basis, which will also reduce scum lines and surface oils, and leave your water feeling soft and silky. Salt Water Magic Salt/Mineral Mix is a quick dissolving pool salt that contains no stain causing water softener additives.

Since your pool water is hard, to supplement the METALTRAP filtration, we also suggest using a 1L bottle of Natural Chemistry METALfree followed by a Natural Chemistry Salt Water Magic Foundation 16-1/2 pound container and a Natural Chemistry Salt Water Magic Foundation 5 pound container. METALfree will quickly and effectively chelate metals still in the water, and Foundation combines all-natural enzymes, borate technology, metal deactivator and a phosphate remover to soften pool water, lock in your pH level and help prolong the life of your pool filter and salt cell.

If you have further questions about converting to a salt water pool or would like help finding the proper equipment or maintenance products, please feel free to give us a call, and one of our friendly, knowledgeable customer service representatives will be more than happy to help.

    • JJ says:

What are your thoughts on the Hayward AquaPlus System with the Total Chemistry kit. I was also wondering if you could email me a quote for this complete system.

    • PoolSupplyWorld says:

Hi again JJ, the Hayward Aqua Plus 40,000 Gallon Chlorination and Control system and Sense and Dispense ORP and pH Sense, ORP Dispense chemistry kit would be a great combination for your 25,000 gallon salt water pool. The Aqua Plus system will provide you with the salt chlorination you need, as it is designed for pools up to 40,000 gallons, and also comes equipped with four relays and three valve outputs, so it can manage one traditional heater, one solar heater, and/or outdoor lighting and other water features. The Sense and Dispense total chemistry system will automatically test and self-adjust the Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP) and pH in your pool to balance and sanitize as needed. The Aqua Plus system can also be controlled using a wireless remote, if desired.

We have forwarded your request for a complete system price quote to our customer service and support team, and a representative will be in contact with you shortly to help set you up with the system that best suits your needs. Thanks, and congratulations on your new pool!

I have a 15k gallon pool, unscreened, below ground, in South Florida. I have had the pool for 6 years, and need to replace the cell for a THIRD time, and the mother board for the second time. What type of system would you recommend with a greater warranty period?

    • PoolSupplyWorld says:

Hi Mike, before we could make an educated recommendation on a new salt chlorine generator, could you please tell us a bit more about your current system? What is the make and model of the salt chlorinator you are using, and the make and model of your cell? We recommend over-sizing a salt cell — as long as it fits the system — in order to accommodate increased chlorine demand caused by, among many factors, direct sunlight and heat, both of which can be overly abundant in South Florida.

Most salt cells, when properly sized and maintained, should last between 3 and 5 years. Potentially, your chlorinator could be working too hard to keep up with chlorine demand, which, in turn, may be contributing to your need to replace the mother board, as well. The warranty on salt chlorine generators varies per manufacturer, but if you could please supply us with the requested information, we would be more than happy to help you determine a system that will work for you.

  7. Sergio says:

I have a 25K gallon pool, pebble tec with in ground pop up cleaners. I have problems with cloudy water and algae in Tucson, AZ. Which system would work best for me?

    • PoolSupplyWorld says:

Hi Sergio, for your 25,000 gallon pool, we would recommend the Hayward Aqua Rite In-Ground Chlorine Generator up to 40,000 Gallons. The largest selling system in the world, the AquaRite easily installs on new or existing filtration systems to create clean, clear, soft water, and its chlorine output can be adjusted based on your pool’s needs. While yours is only a 25,000 gallon pool and the AquaRite we are suggesting is designed for pools up to 40,000 gallons, we recommend this system because over-sizing your salt chlorinator helps ensure a longer lifespan for your salt cell and should cut down on the amount of required maintenance.

Since you are having issues with cloudy water and algae, it is best to treat your pool before using the AquaRite System. We recommend Natural Chemistry Clear and Perfect 8 oz, which is designed to clear up cloudy water, as well as Algaecide 60 ZAPPER Non-Metallic 1 qt, for eliminating algae contamination in pools. We hope this has helped, and please let us know if we can be of any further assistance.

  8. Todd says:

Have a 13,500 gallon fiberglass pool , which chlorinator would you recommend for south Loisiana.

  9. Tra Miller says:

was wondering of the effect that the salt has on the metals around the pool ladders the zinc sides that are the top portion of my in-ground. I have fox 26000 gal what would yo recommend for the best all around fit.

    • PoolSupplyWorld says:

Hi Tra, thank you for your excellent question. For your size pool we would recommend the Pentair IntelliChlor IC40 Complete Salt Chlorine Generator System with Power Center. The reason we recommend a chlorine system for a 40k pool is that upsizing the cell leaves room for increased chlorine production if you need it. Also, less demand is placed on the cell, which can extend its life. The IntelliChlor is far and away one of the best automated salt cells on the market. Its push-button operation and full diagnostic capabilites make it simple to use and even easier to service.

As to your question about the effect salt has on pool equipment, we can say that as long as your salt levels are in the 2,500 to 4,000 PPM range you shouldn’t have a problem. You’re right to ask, though. By nature, salt is corrosive. If your levels get to 4,500 you will start to have trouble with corrosion. Please let us know if we can be of any further assistance.

  10. Thanh says:

Which salt cholrinator would you recommend for my above ground 20K gal pool which has the horizontal portion of return pipe run 8″ below the wooden pool deck a fwe inches below water surface and has a clear space of 12″ long to install the cell?

    • PoolSupplyWorld says:

Hi Thanh, we recommend the Pentair IntelliChlor IC40 Complete Salt Chlorine Generator System for your above ground pool. This chlorinator produces up to 1.4 pounds of chlorine every 24 hours and will give your 20,000 gallon above ground pool sufficient chlorine to sanitize properly. The IC40 salt cell can be installed horizontally or vertically depending on your equipment set up. For the best flow, it’s recommended to have 12”-18” of straight pipe in front of the cell inlet. Please let us know if we can be of further assistance.
