Why Nature2 is the Eco-Friendly Choice

Taking the step to environmentally responsible pool care is becoming a priority for a growing number of pool and spa owners. Most people just think about making their homes eco-friendly or purchasing a hybrid vehicle, but you can do more when it comes to pool or spa.
"...And, with recent reports that chlorine levels in pools are often 200 to 400 times higher than what's considered safe for the environment" (source, Yahoo! Green)
Nature2 Spa   Zodiac’s Nature2 mineral sanitizing products dramatically reduce the need for large amounts of chlorine and chemicals. Not only does reducing the amount chemicals used help the environment, it also makes your water feel better. Zodiac recommends,

"When Nature2 is used with Zodiac's Cense, aromatherapy MPS (the most recommended oxidant for spas) Nature2 Spa becomes the only EPA-approved chlorine-free mineral sanitizer system for spas on the market" (source, Nature2)
With alternatives available at affordable prices, the use of alternative sanitizers make the most sense to provide a all around better experience while helping do your part to better the environment.
"Findings that link regular swimming in chlorinated pools by young children to an increased risk of developing asthma" (source, The Green Guide)

Zodiac LM3 vs DuoClear Comparison

Zodiac is known for being a company that is on the forefront of the alternative pool sanitizer industry, and these two salt chlorine generators are no exception. Both systems use Zodiac’s revolutionary salt cell technology to generate chlorine from regular salt, but there are a few differences when it comes to choosing a system for your pool.
Zodiac DuoClear series Zodiac LM3 series
Zodiac DuoClear Chlorinator Zodiac DuoClear Chlorinator
The first thing that you might notice is the difference in price, $819.95 for the DuoCLear and $769.95 for the LM3 comparable model. The price difference might not seem like that much, but what you get for that price is the added sanitizing power of the Nature2 natural sanitizer incorporated into the salt chlorine generator. This results in less chlorine needed to clean your water, which will make the water feel better and look better.
Also by using the DuoClear your salt cell should actually last longer than the LM3, due to the Nature2 sanitizer helping clean the water and taking some of the stress off the cell. But at the same time, you need to replace the Nature2 element when it runs out.
Besides that, these 2 chlorinators are pretty much the same; both come in different sizes for different pool sizes and a reputation with one of the leaders in eco-friendly pool cleaning technology. But looking both systems over, the DuoClear is a better all around choice even if it’s a little more expensive upfront.

How Spas Work

How does a hot tub work? Something that you might not have every asked yourself or have needed to ask yourself but if you’re a spa / hot tub owner, it’s something that you should definitely know. Knowing how your spa works can increase the chances that if something did go wrong, you could potentially identify the problem and fix it yourself rather than need a professional to fix it. So let’s go over the main parts of a spa:
Spa Jets Jet
These are the outlets that the water returns from the heater and circulate the water while massaging your back.
Spa Filter Filter
This element filters the water to clean out the larger contaminants, to learn more about the different types of filters and more about the different parts, Click Here (link to identify spa parts article).
Spa Pump Pump
This pulls the water in through the filter and then pushes it through the rest of the system and out the jets
Spa Filter Control System
The control unit does exactly what you think it does; it controls all the different elements such as the jets, air blower, pump, lights, temperature, etc.
Spa ozonator Ozonator
A ozonator might not be install on your hot tub from the factory but must can have a aftermarket one installed if you don’t have it, but this unit creates ozone and mixes it with your water to help clean the water with less chemicals.
Spa Ari Blower Air Blower
The air blower forces air through small air injector fittings all over the spa, creating a bubbling effect.
To give you an idea about how a spa works in a simplified version we’ve included a diagram of how everything works together:
How a spa filter system works

How to Open Your Pool for Spring

Summer time is right around the corner and we want you to be ready to enjoy your pool as soon as possible, so here are some steps you can take to make sure your pool is ready when you need it. If you have a new pool or one that’s been closed, proper opening help prevent problems later on. It’s recommended that you purchase a start up kit that comes with all the chemicals you’ll need to open your pool for the season.
Natural Chemistry Spray-On cover cleaner 1. First you will want to remove your pool cover, clean it, and dry it. You can also use a cover cleaner, like our Natural Chemistry Spray-On cover cleaner, then put it away for storage. Be sure to empty your skimmer baskets and clean your filter, you can use Grimeaway Filter Cleaner to increase your filter efficiency.
2. Next you need to make sure your water level is at the proper height, you can tell by looking at the skimmer. Your water line should be half way up the opening to your skimmer, if low fill accordingly and if high drain accordingly.
3. You now need to check to make sure your pump and filter system is going to work properly; we can do this by checking to make sure all lines are open, and then check the manufacturer’s recommendations for preparing your pump, heater, filter, etc. Grimeaway Filter Cleaner
4. You will now want to test your water balance, to do this you can either take a quart of your water to a pool professional or you can test your water yourself. Make sure you have the chlorine stabilizer checked, and then follow the instructions to balance your water.
5. If you have cloudy water and can’t see the bottom of the pool or if you have large debris in the bottom, you should remove all large debris so when we shock the pool it will be more effective.
SUPER Sparkler Clarifier 6. Once you have a full pool with any large debris removed from the bottom, you can turn on your pump to start to circulate the water. You can add a clarifier like SUPER Sparkler Clarifier to help get rid of the small particles. You can now hook up your vacuum or automatic cleaner and clean the entire pool.
Were almost done, soon your pool will be ready to go.
7. We want to shock the swimming pool with something like Di-Chlor Fast Dissolving Chlorine Shock, but only after you’ve removed all debris and have let the filter run overnight. You can now add 1lb of shock per 10,000 gallons of water and make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions on how to introduce the shock to the water. Di-Chlor Fast Dissolving Chlorine Shock
8. Next we will chlorinate the pool by whatever method you have set up, but it’s recommended to use twice the normal amount for your pool size when getting ready for a new season. If you have an automatic feeder, let it do its thing automatically. You should let it run overnight.
Algaecide 60 ZAPPER Non-Metallic 9. We now should use an algaecide like a Algaecide 60 ZAPPER Non-Metallic, to kill the algae that is in your pool now but also prevent any new algae from entering your pool.
You should now be ready to enjoy your sparkling clear swimming pool! You should regularly test your water to prevent spending more time and money on adjusting your water. You can buy a complete swimming pool season opening kit that comes with everything you need to get your pool ready.

Pentair Intelliflo Pool Pump Review

Pentair has set a new standard in pool pumps by developing the Intelliflo, a technologically superior pool pump that will have you wondering why you ever used anything else. How would you like a pool pump that can save you 90% on your energy consumption while at the same time running and not even notice its running? Well all that is possible with the Pentair Intelliflo, when I say this a technologically advanced pool pump I mean you can control the settings and its smart enough to sense problems itself!
The Intelliflo has the ability to sense numerous hazards and corrects them so you don’t have to worry, this way your pump will last longer and save you even more money.
Just a few of the problems the Intelliflo can detect and correct are:
  • Loss of prime condition
  • Overheating and freezing conditions
  • Adjusts to common voltage irregularities
  • If a blockage occurs the pump with shut down automatically
Pentair Intelliflo swimming pool pump
The Pentair Intelliflo utilizes a control panel on the pump itself that provides you the current status, run time and mode. You have the ability to set automatic cycles or use the pump in manual mode and set the RPM or flow setting yourself. Programming is easy with simple push buttons and menus; you can switch from vacuum mode to backwash mode with the push of a button.
How much energy the Pentair Intelliflo uses

The one thing that everyone wants to know is, how much is it going to save me?
Well to run the pump in most parts of the country the costs go from 28 cents a hour to 3 cents a hour! This is due to the PMSM (permanent magnet synchronous motor) with is 45% - 75% more efficient the conventional motor technology. What all that really means is that the pump can run on about 100 watts, which is comparable to the amount of power a light bulb needs.

As if all this wasn’t enough, the Intelliflo is also one of the quietest pool pumps available today. To put this in perspective of decibels, a whisper is about 20 decibels. While normal pumps run at 70 – 80 decibels, the Intelliflo runs at a remarkable 7 – 10 decibels! You could be standing right next to it while it's running and not even know it.
So let’s recap:

  • Fully control able and programmable
  • built in safe guards
  • increased longevity
  • 90% cost reduction in energy per hour
  • quiet as half a whisper
  • controllable wirelessly
  • permanent magnet synchronous motor
  • Consumes 68% - 71% less energy than common pumps

Pentair Intellitouch pool control system You can even control the pump remotely along with the other comppnents of your pool system with the Intellitouch pool control system
The Pentair Intelliflo sets the bar high for what other pool pumps should strive to be by being the all around package that delivers on every front.

Why Use a Sand Filter System?

Sta Rite system 3 sand filter
Sand pool filters are a great choice for anyone that wants to try and save as much money as they can when putting together a filtration system. Sand filter systems do require backwashing but a properly sized filter for the right size pool can go up to 4 weeks without having to back wash.

The sand itself is #20 silica sand (45 – 55 mm) and relatively inexpensive to replace, but typically you don’t have to change the sand until the 7 year mark. A sand filter is efficient enough to keep just about any pool clean, but its recommended to have a filter system that a little bit more capacity than needed. This is also recommended for all filter types, just to reduce the strain on the pump.

Why Upgrade Your Spa Ozonator?

ZO-301 DEL Industries spa ozone generator is one of the first units DEL sold to spa manufacturers starting back in 1996. If you have a spa ozonator that looks like the ZO-301 (see image) you may want to upgrade to current technology.
Below is a comparison which includes reasons why you might want to consider upgrading from ZO-301 to the MCD-50:
Del Ozone Spa ZO-301
Del Ozone ZO-301
  • ZO-301 generates approximately 250 PPM, or 40 mg of ozone
  • ZO-301 consumes 40 mA, 48W (110V)
  • ZO-301 utilizes old ballast technology which can fail if water backs up, and can cause noise interference in the spa pack
  • The ZO-301 lamp is rated for 9,000 hours. Replacement costs rise as customers switch to current CD technology
  • Because the ZO-301 is similar to a fluorescent lamp in an office, it will light up beyond ozone…some say for 18 years. This is a false indicator light which prevents you from replacing the lamp in a timely fashion to ensure your water quality stays excellent
Del Ozone Spa MCD-50
Del Ozone MCD-50
  • MCD-50 generates approximately 580 PPM, or 50 (to 60) mg
  • MCD-50 consumes 50mA, 6W for (110V)
  • The MCD-50 is resistant to water back up and has no noise interference issues
  • The MCD-50 was introduced by DEL in 2003 to surpass any other technology on the market. It is, to date, in a class all its own
  • The MCD-50 utilizes CD electrode technology which is incredibly reliable. They have been running five years, most spas 24/7, without failure. Count on these lasting you a good five years, then freshen up your ozonator with a Renewal Kit which includes everything you need to get your MCD-50 up to par again.
  • The MCD-50, unlike UV technology, will fail when they ozone production has declined. In other words, it’s easier to tell if your MCD-50 is still working to satisfaction.
DEL Ozone still makes the ZO-301 today, and if you plan on simply replacing what you have with the same thing, you can.
But we recommend that you look into upgrading to the Delzone MCD-50...

Have you Checked Your Ozonator Lately?

Think back to when you first bought your spa…do you remember how fresh and crisp the water was? As your spa ages, so does the spa’s ozone generator which is in charge of keeping your water clean and healthy. Chances are, you bought your spa with an ozone system but the dealer didn’t mention you had to maintain it, like you have the change the oil in your car.
DEL Industries, also known as DEL Ozone, has been the major supplier of ozone to the spa manufacturers since 1998. Most likely, if there is an ozone generator on your spa, it’s probably a DEL. The first thing you need to do to update your water sanitation is identify which ozone generator is on your spa.
Del Ozone CDS-16 DEL Industries introduced the innovated CD Chip technology back in 1998 with the CDS-16. Highly efficient in energy and size, this unit quickly became the most commonly installed ozone generator at the spa manufacturing level. Unfortunately, DEL did not place an obvious sticker anywhere on this unit which makes it difficult to locate and recognize. This tiny unit is about the size of an Ivory soap box or two packs of playing cards. It measures 5.75”H x 3”W x 2”D and weighs in at one pound. In 2008 DEL moved the date sticker to the side for easier identification.
The ZO-301 UV ozone generator is one of the oldest DEL units out there. If you have one of these, you can replace with a new ZO-301 or use the Spa Eclipse which has a comparable output. These units are disposable (unlike the ZO-300 or ZO-302 which have replaceable lamps). For an upgrade, try the MCD-50. Note: UV lamps contain Mercury and should be disposed of properly according your local disposal rules. Del Ozone ZO-301
Del Ozone ZO-300 The ZO-300 and ZO-302 UV ozone generators were not as commonly installed at the spa factory level as much as the ZO-301, but if you come across one of these, you can renew it with the Renewal Kit 9-0721-01 which includes a replacement lamp, tubing, check valve and hose clamps. Note: UV lamps contain Mercury and should be disposed of properly according your local disposal rules. For more ozone output with current technology, upgrade to the MCD-50.
The Spa Eclipse was introduced after the CDS-16 to satisfy a demand for the need of 220V (the CDS-16 is 110V only, which makes it more compact). The two units use the same CD Chip technology and the same Renewal Kit part number 9-0720-01 giving you a replacement chip, tubing, check valve and hose clamps. Del Ozone Spa Eclipse
Del Ozone MCD-50 The MCD-50 has been installed by spa manufacturers since 2003. This high-output CD ozone generator has a Renewal Kit part number 9-0723-01 which includes a replacement CD cell (or electrode), fuse, hose barb, o’ring, check valve and tubing. This is the best unit for spas available on the market today, so if you have one, there is only one replacement. If you have a diffrent spa ozone generator on your spa, and desire more ozone for an increase in water sanitation while decreasing chemicals and water chemistry problems, update your spa with a MCD-50.

Suction Side
Polaris ATV
Polaris ATV suction side swimming pool cleaner
Suction side cleaners uses your existing filter system to produce the suction to clean your pool, some systems might have a dedicated vacuum line for the cleaner. Other wise it connects through the skimmer and sucks up debris then passes it through the filter as it works its way around the pool.
Pressure Side
Polaris 280 Polaris 380
Polaris 280 Pressure Side swimming pool cleaner Polaris 380 Pressure Side swimming pool cleaner
Pressure side cleaners require a booster pump to power them and work there way around the pool, sucking up debris into their bag and sending the remaining water through to the filter. Your filter system must have a dedicated booster pump to operate.
Pressure Side without a booster pump
Polaris 360
Polaris 280 Pressure Side swimming pool cleaner
This pressure side cleaners does NOT require a booster pump, but works the same way as the 280 and 380, sucking up debris into their bag and sending the remaining water through to the filter.

Why Use A DE Pool Filter

Pentair 4000 series DE filter

If your #1 priority is water purification, then the DE filter is right for you. This type of filter can work on particles all the way down to 3 – 5 microns. This is quite a big leap from the sand filter and even more then the cartridge filter, giving you superior water quality.

The DE system works similar to the cartridge filter system in the way that it contains filter grids that get coated with DE that the water must pass through. The DE filter needs to be cleaned only about twice a year to remove the build up and allow fresh DE to trap to the grid.DE filters provide superior water quality and are relatively inexpensive to purchase and maintain, making them a great addition to your pool.

How Salt Chlorine Systems Work

Many people now-a-days are building their pools and converting their existing pools to use a salt water chlorine generator to produce the chlorine as opposed to the normal way or adding chlorine by tablet, granules, or liquid.
Without going back to high school chemistry class, the way a salt chlorine generator works is the water with salt added to it passes through a cell that contains metal plates inside. The metal plates have a small electric current run to them and a small chemical reaction occurs when the salt water hits the plates which release Chlorine as a gas. As the water is pushed through the cell it combines with the gas and goes back to your pool, this chlorine is 100% pure and does a better job at killing contaminants. Here’s a diagram illustrating how this works:
How salt chlorine generators work
Now that you know how a salt chlorine system works we should talk about the advantages of using this instead of a traditional chlorine system.
Advantages:
  1. The biggest plus to having a salt system is the low maintenance that is required which normal chlorine, after you add your initial salt to the system you shouldn’t have to add more unless you have a leak or rainwater overflow
  2. Salt cells normally last from 3 – 5 years before they need to be replaced
  3. Your pool water will fell silkier and smoother, while feeling better on your skin. While also making the water look cleaner as well
  4. Using alternative sanitizers is better on the environment by reducing the use of chemicals and waste
As we all become more conscious of our environment, a salt chlorine generator is just one of the small changes we can make to better the earth and ourselves. The initial cost might be more but the overall experience you’re going to receive and saving more over time is well worth it.

Polaris PB4-60 and PB4-60Q Comparison

The Polaris PB4-60 and the PB4-60Q booster pumps are both great pumps produced by one of the leading pool supply equipment manufacturers. One of the main differences between these 2 pumps is that the PB4-60Q is 28% quieter than comparable pumps on the market. With the price difference of the PB4-60Q being around $20 more than the PB4-60, it's worth the little extra for the features that you get. We always recommend staying within a manufacturer when buy equipment or replacement parts, so if you have a Polaris 280, 380, 480, or 3900 either of these pumps would be a great choice.

PB4-60
Features:
  • Powered by a durable MagnetTek motor
  • ¾ HP to provide constant pressure at all times
  • Built on dependable Polaris technology
  • Lower cost than the PB460Q
PB4-60Q
Features:
  • ¾ HP booster pump that uses 230/115 volts
  • 360 degree volute adjustability
  • Wingnut style drain plug doesn’t need tools or silicone
  • The seal does not require silicone or special tools to replace
  • 28% quieter than comparable pumps
  • Patented design ensures leak protection for bearings
Polaris PB4-60 Booster Pump
Polarus PB4-60Q Booster Pump
Conclusion:
If you are on a strict budget (which right now i wouldn't blame you), then the PB4-60 is a great choice. But if you can spend just a little bit more then i would definitely go with the Polaris PB4-60Q, just for the fact that I would prefer a quieter pump with more adjustability and ease of use. Polaris has you covered both ways.

Why Upgrade My Polaris 180 to a 280?

The Polaris 180 was one of the most reliable and effective pool cleaners in its day, and many are still being used to this day. But for a lot of people that have had there for so long it might be time to start thinking about upgrading, especially if your 180 is starting to break down and you have to replace parts.
If you own the Polaris 180 you know how much of a workhorse it is, along with great reliability it’s a cleaner that you can’t go wrong with. Polaris knew this so they took the great foundation of the 180 and upgraded it with the 280.

Some of the key points that were upgraded with the 280 are:
  • Larger throat for sucking up larger debris
  • Easy to remove and attach filter bag
  • Dual thrust jets
  • Larger filter bag
  • Available in black
  • Available in TankTrax for vinyl pools
Polaris 280 vs Polaris 180, 280 is better
Just like the Polaris 180, the 280 is built using a stainless steel driveshaft to ensure reliability for years to come. So if you love your Polaris 180 like many other people do then it might be time to let go and fall in love again with the new Polaris 280.

Why Use A Cartridge Pool Filter?

Pentair clean and clear plus sand filter

The cartridge filter is the middle man in trio of pool filtration systems, taking benefits from the sand and DE filters. Low maintenance is probably the best feature about the cartridge filter, as it does not require any back washing. At the most you have to hose off your filters or replace them; this saves a lot of hassle for the average homeowner.

A system with the right size filter cartridge can go as long as 6 months in-between cleanings. The cartridge filters better then the sand filter, getting down to about 5 – 10 microns. This particular type of filter system uses lower pressure than DE and sand systems resulting in less strain on the pump. Another great reason to go with a cartridge filter is the fact that you won’t waste nearly as much water as you would backwashing a sand or DE filter, thus reducing water consumption and cost.

What Is Ozone And Why Is It Good?

Technically speaking ozone is the result of 3 atoms of oxygen bonding together. This is caused by UV or a corona discharge rays hitting the oxygen molecules. You might be thinking, “What’s the point of that?” and plain and simple it helps clean your water without harsh chemicals. Now most of us at one point have been in a spa with too much chlorine or bromine and it is very unpleasant. When ozone is used, the oxygen molecules become a stronger oxidizer and kills contaminants easier.
Here's a example of how ozone is formed and what it does:
how ozone is created
A ozonator is a great way to start you on your way to a eco-friendly pool or to add the necessary step to make your system completely chlorine free! If you use a ozonator along with chlorine or bromine, it enhances their effect allowing you to not have to replace them as often. Ozone is compatible with alternative purification methods such as Nature2 or Spa Frog.
Benefits:
  • Cleans and makes the water feel softer
  • Chemical uses goes down 25%
  • Can be used with alternative purification systems
  • Ozone oxidizes such contaminants as soap, hair spray, cologne, makeup, etc.
  • When used with the proper sanitizer, ozone can kill bacteria, germs, and viruses.
  • Reduces odor of chlorine
  • Maintenance time and costs decrease
  • Prolongs your equipment life

Why Switch To A Robotic Cleaner

So your old Kreepy Krauly is just about falling apart and you’re thinking about getting a new pool cleaner, you want something that’s going to work well and not require a lot of maintenance. Well maybe it’s time you thought about switching to that latest and greatest in pool cleaning technology, the robotic poll cleaner.
Pentair Prowler 730 Robotic Pool Cleaner This type of pool cleaner is a complete self contained unit that doesn’t require any attachment to your existing pool filter system, the cleaner actually has a built in filter bag that can filter your water itself as it cleans! This means no running your pool pump for longer hours, putting un-needed wear and tear on your pump / filter and wasting more electricity. To operate you just plug in the cord to the transformer box outside the pool, set the cleaner in and turn it on. That’s it.
Now you might be thinking, “they’re so expensive, I don’t think it’s worth the money”. This could not be anywhere farther from the truth. The first thing most people don’t realize is that most robotic cleaners run off low voltage (24v) power, but if you have to run your pump at a higher speed it requires 110v or even 220v! This will be a savings that you will be constantly getting every time you clean your pool. SmartPool ProKleen 4x4 Robotic Pool Cleaner
For people with a sand or DE filter, you have to backwash your filter regularly, by using a robotic cleaner and not having to run the filter pump as much, you cut down on backwashing. This in turn saves you on water and chemicals, not to mention helping to have a more eco-friendly pool cleaning system.
Dirt Devil Rampage Plus Robotic Pool Cleaner While I can go on and on about how great robotic pool cleaners are, you really have to see them in action to appreciate the technology that has been put into these cleaning machines.
From being able to learn your pools shape and escape obstacles, to having a remote control that lets you take control; the robotic pool cleaner can do everything you could ask for in a pool cleaner.

Pool Filter Type Comparison

Determining what pool filter is right for your pool can be a confusing topic that will get you different opinions from different pool professionals. There are advantages and disadvantages to all 3 types of pool filters but were going to try and go over them to educate you for when it comes times to choose one for your pool. We will start describing how each type works and then a pros and cons list, so let’s dive in:
Sand filters
pentair triton II sand pool filter
This filter type uses none other than sand to filter your water; your pump pushes the water in over the sand and the jagged edges of the sand trap dirt. As the sand collects dirt, the filter actually increases its efficiency because there are more elements to trap dirt in the sand. This is somewhat of a double edged sword because as the sand collects dirt, the pressure increases and will need to be backwashed (clean water is pushed back through and out the filter).

Pros:
  • Least expensive filter of the 3 types
  • Sand is inexpensive to replace
  • Requires changing around 7 years

Cons:
  • Requires backwashing and wastes water
  • Filters particles down to 20 – 25 microns
  • Might require cleaning as often as once a week during heavy use
  • Smaller particles can make their way back into the pool

Cartridge filter
jandy cl cartridge pool filter
The cartridge filter system is becoming quite popular recently and one of the reasons for that could be the fact that it is the most economical of the 3. This filter type uses an actual filter that looks similar to a air filter and works the same way; water is pushed through the fabric and dirt particles are trapped (air filters will NOT work in your pool filter). As far as cost-wise, the cartridge filter is in the middle with sand being the cheapest and DE being the most expensive. Cleaning is as simple as taking your filter cartridges out and hosing them off.

Pros:
  • No backwashing required, resulting in less water waste
  • Filtration of particles of to 5 – 10 microns
  • Least maintenance of the 3 types
  • Run at lower pressure, putting less back pressure on the pump

Cons:
  • Cartridges that last the longest are more expensive
  • Doesn’t filter the water as good as DE
  • More expensive than a sand filter

DE (Diatomaceous Earth) Filter
pentair fns plus DE Diatomaceous earth pool filter
A DE filter will get your water the cleanest of the 3, but with that cleanliness comes the cost. The way a DE filter works is it uses billions of tiny fossilized diatoms (plankton skeletons) to coat a grid that looks similar to a cartridge filter. The grids are packed with DE and water is pushed through and cleaned, resulting in the cleanest water of the 3. As with the sand filter, the DE must be backwashed when the pressure builds up resulting in water waste. All DE filters should have a thorough cleaning once a year to remove build up on the grids.

Pros:
  • Cleanest water of the 3
  • DE can be replaced by adding it through the skimmer
  • Filter particles down to 3 – 5 microns

Cons:
  • Most expensive
  • Backwashing required, wasting water
  • DE filters tend to run at higher pressure, which can cause some inefficiency
  • Higher amount of maintenance
Conclusion
Overall we recommend the cartridge filter system, because it gives you somewhat the best of both worlds. You get low maintenance, and less water waste then a sand or DE filter while still getting maintaining good water filtration. The cost is in between the 2 other types, also using less water for backwashing and lower pressure on the pump, all around this is the most economical choice.

Polaris 360 pressure side swimming pool cleaner
Polaris 360 pressure side swimming pool cleaner
Polaris 360 pressure side swimming pool cleaner
Polaris 360 pressure side swimming pool cleaner

Today we’re going to install the Polaris 360; much like the other Polaris cleaners, we can have the 360 up and running in a few steps. In our pool we have a dedicated return line with a 1-1/2” female fitting. If you don’t have a dedicated refer line please refer to your manual page 5.

The first flush out the return line by turning the pump on for a minute and then turn it off. Next, install the universal wall fitting (UWF) by disconnecting it from the quick connect and screw it on to the fitting. Now re attach the quick disconnect by inserting it into UWF, turn clockwise and pull.

Note: At this point If you have multiple return lines, eyeball regulators need to be installed in the lines to ensure adequate line pressure. Please refer to your manual for help with this.

Now we need to test and adjust the water pressure, to do so we need to connect the hose at the quick disconnect fitting. Then turn the pump on and cover the large hole with your thumb and confirm that water is coming out the pressure release valve at the end connected to the wall. If water isn’t coming out the relief valve, there isn’t adequate pressure and refer to your manual.

Polaris 360 float position diagram

Next we need to adjust the hose to fit the pool, to do that we need to connect the hose to the return line and hold the hose underwater then turn on the pump. Extend the hose to the farthest end of the pool; the hose needs to be within 6” longer or shorter of the farthest point. If too long, cut the excess from the first section and reconnect. If too short, extensions can be purchased here. After correct length is achieved, adjust the floats according to the diagram.

Polaris 360 float position diagram

Now we’re going to assemble the cleaner, first remove pressure tester from the hose by unscrewing the hose nut and pulling off. Use this same nut to attach the hose to the cleaner body at the feed pipe. Next pull the bag out of the cleaner body and attach bag tie collar to feed hose. Then push the head float all the way in against the body. Now place the 360 in the pool and turn the filter pump on.

That’s it for assembly but we need to check to make sure our wheels are spinning the proper RPM. The manual states the Polaris 360 needs to operate between 28 and 32 RPM. To check yours, mark one wheel tire then turn the pump on and count the revolutions for a minute. If your count is outside the 28 – 32 range, refer to your manual for help.

Zodiac LM3 Salt water chlorinator
Zodiac LM3 Salt water chlorinator
Zodiac LM3 Salt water chlorinator

This is the installation of the Zodiac LM3 salt water chlorinator, while this install is a little more technical then installing a pool cleaner we will try and get you through it. First we need to go over some specifications of the LM3 and it is extremely important that you pay attention to all notes and warnings.

Specifications:
Salt level: 4000ppm

Max chlorine output/hour (gas chlorine equivalent):
- LM3-15: 15 grams/hour
- LM3-24: 24 grams/hour
- LM3-40: 40 grams/hour

Minimum flow rate: 20 gallons/minute

Plumbing: 1 ½” or 2” schedule 40 PVC

Max water temp through cell: 104 F

Max operating pressure: 40 psi

Max salt level: 13,000 ppm

Power requirements 220 volt / 3 amp draw

Important: Salt level in your pool should never exceed 13,000 ppm and salt levels above 6,000 ppm may damage other components!

We always recommend hiring a swimming pool professional or certified electrician for a install like this, but if you want to still proceed with doing it yourself, let’s get started.

If your pool water level is above the height of the pool equipment or you have multiple installations, please refer to your manual

First we need to plump the cell into our current system, this needs to be done so that the LM3 cell is the last piece on pool equipment that water passes through before it gets back to the pool. There are no height requirement but the cell needs to be installed horizontally and the inlet and outlet are specified on the unit. The ports are 2” and require schedule 40 PVC only, if you have 1 ½” pipe you can use the bushings provided. Any standard PVC cement can be used but make sure to give it enough time to dry before turning it on.

Here is a example of how the cell can be installed:

Zodiac LM3 install diagram

Note: the cell should be installed no more than 6’ of the power pack, and if you have to apply pressure to the top on the cell, apply pressure with both hands as shown.

Zodiac does not recommend installing a salt water chlorinator on a pool using a stainless steel filter

Next were going to install the Power Pack, this can be mounted on a wall or post. If you want it mounted on a post, it must be centered on a flat panel of waterproof material at least 10” x 18”. Do not enclose the Power Pack in any box or above any heat source. The power pack needs to be at last 10’ from the pool edge. If you can’t install the cell within 6’ of the Power Pack, you can purchase an extension kit.

The Power Pack is going to be hard wired to 220V ONLY, it should be wired to the “LOAD” side of the pump timer, so its powered up only when the pump is powered. Now attach the yellow plug cap to the cell and replace the blue end cover.

Now we are going to wire to a controller.

This can be done in 2 ways:

1. Via auxiliary relay at the pool automation controller
Using this method the LM3 mains power is connected to an auxiliary relay in the Pool Automation System. The LM3 unit is switched on and off as determined by the Pool Automation System settings from the Auxiliary relay. The “Output Setting” and the selection of “Super Chlorinate” must be selected at the LM3 control panel initially and the LM3 will retain these settings when switched on by the Pool Automation System until they are manually changed.

NOTE: The Super Chlorinate function will remain active for a total of 24 operating hours after being selected.

IMPORTANT: The LM3 should only have power when there is water flow and actuator valves should never block the flow when power is on. Refer to the controller’s installation guide for additional informa tion.

2. Via a Communications Link
The LM3 has the capability of being connected to a number of controller units:
  • Polaris EOS
  • Jandy Aqualink RS* (REV “K” and “L”)
  • Pentair IntelliTouch**
Using this method means power is supplied to the LM3 via the controller’s ‘PUMP’ output and a communications link is made between the LM3 and the Pool Automation system.

When the communication link is connected, the Pool Automation system becomes the master control for the LM3 enabling the pool owner to control all settings of the LM3 via the Pool Automation system control panel and warning messages for low salt and no flow will be displayed on the Pool Automation system control panel.

When the communication link is removed, control of the LM3 settings returns to the LM3 control panel.

NOTE: After a change is made at the controller, it may take several seconds for the change to be reflected on the LM3 front panel, this delay depends on the controller being used.

Once you have determined how you want to wire the controller, remove the LM3 Power Pack cover and connect the 4-conductor communication wire to the “eos com” terminal black on the LM3 control PCB mounted in the cover. The wiring examples are displayed below for the different controllers:
Zodiac LM3 install diagramZodiac LM3 install diagram
Zodiac LM3 install diagram

The communications wire needs to be secured by fitting the wire into the slot beside the output cable cord grip and use the cable tires to secure the comm. wire to the cell output cable as shown below:

Zodiac LM3 install diagram

That’s just about it for the install; we recommend that you read the entire manual for operating information and how the Zodiac LM3 Salt Chlorinator interface works.

Polaris 3900 pressure side swimming pool cleaner
Polaris 3900 pressure side swimming pool cleaner
Polaris 3900 pressure side swimming pool cleaner
Polaris 3900 pressure side swimming pool cleaner

Now we are going to install the highly regarded Polaris 3900 Sport. The pool for our example has a dedicated return line with a 1-1/2” female fitting.

Make sure to flush out the return line by turning the pump on for a minute and then turn it off before we start. Next, install the universal wall fitting (UWF) by disconnecting the UWF from the quick connect and screw it on to the fitting with the blue restrictor plate in between the UWF and the return line. Now re attach the quick disconnect by inserting it into UWF, turn clockwise and pull.

The next step involves adjusting the hose to the right length needed for your pool. Measure the deepest part of the pool. Cut leader hose, from end that attaches to feed hose, so length is equal to the greatest depth of the pool. Attach the leader hose to the feed hose and attach the feed hose to the quick connect at the return line. The hose must be within 6” of the farthest end, longer or shorter. If longer, separate the hose at the swivel and cut equal amounts of overage from each 10 foot feed hose section. After the length is adjusted position the hose floats as shown below:

Polaris 3900 float position diagram

Now we need assemble the cleaner, first attach the feed hose connector to the feed pipe by pressing until it locks. The filter bag is packaged in the collar area of the vacuum tube, pull out the bag and attach the clasp to the loop on the top of the bag and secure the Velcro strips. Now turn on the filter pump to prime before turning on the booster pump.

That’s it for assembly but we need to check to make sure our wheels are spinning the proper RPM. The manual states the 280 needs to operate between 30 and 36 RPM. To check yours, mark one wheel tire then turn the pump on and count the revolutions for a minute. If your count is outside the 30 – 36 range, refer to your manual for help.

Now you can sit back and enjoy your Polaris 3900 Sport. We still recommend you refer to the manual for maintenance tips and fine tuning to ensure your pool is cleaned as efficiently as possible.

Jandy Aqualink PDA-PS8 Setup

Today we’ve decided to set up our Jandy Aqualink PDA-PS8 pool control system, the installation has been done by a pool professional to ensure everything works right and we recommend you to do the same.
Here’s a

Here is a diagram showing our plumbing:
swimming pool plumbing diagram
breakdown of our pool equipment:
  • Jandy Stealth Pool Pump Dual Speed - 1.5 HP
  • Jandy Stealth Pool Pump - Full Rated - 2 HP (for spa jets)
  • Jandy LXi400 Propane Gas IID Digital Low NOx Heater
  • Jandy PureLink Kit salt chlorine generator
  • Polaris 280 cleaner w/ booster pump
  • For pool lights we used JandyWhite Pool Light 100W
  • For spa lights we used JandyWhite Spa Light 100W
  • We also have 2 water features
Jandy Aqualink PDA-PS8 remote control
Here’s what were going to configure:
Setting the pump and booster pump to run at certain times
Set the temperatures for the pool and spa
Enable our water feature and lights
Setting Chlorine percentage output
How to manually turn on the heater pump

Setting pump timers
The first thing we want to program is to have the pool pump run at low from 8 am to 5 pm and run at high from 8 am to 10 am. So first we need to highlight MENU and press select, then highlight PROGRAM and press select. Now we're in the program menu, so we highlight the FILTER PUMP and press select, now we want to highlight ADD PROGRAM and press select. You should now see a on and off time along with a range of days, you can change each of these to the time we want so ON is changed to 8 am and OFF is changed to 5 pm, we want this to happen every day so we select ALL DAYS and press select. To have the booster pump on from 8 am to 10 am we would repeat the process but select the AUX number that our booster pump is set to and set the appropriate times.

Example:
Jandy Aqualink PDA-PS8 programming

Programming pool/spa temperatures
We also want to set our pool and spa temperatures to remain we're we like them, the default temperature for the pool in 80 degrees F and the spa is 102 degrees F. If we want to change either of those we highlight MENU and press select, then highlight SET TEMP and pres select, now inside this menu you can select POOL HEAT or SPA HEAT and press select. Now you can adjust the individual temperatures and press select to apply.

Example:
Jandy Aqualink PDA-PS8 programming

Turning on Water features, pool lights, spa lights etc.
In order to control our water features we have to know which auxiliary slot they are wired into; in our case the water features are wired to AUX 2, the pool light is wired to AUX 3, and the spa light is wired into AUX 4. Turning these on is quite easy, we highlight EQUIPMENT ON/OFF and press select, then highlight which AUX we want to turn on and press select. The same process is taken to turn it off.

Example:
Jandy Aqualink PDA-PS8 programming

Setting chlorine percentage output
Since we are using a AquaPure chlorine generator, we can see the percentage of chlorine output and set it to what we would like it for our pool. To set the chlorine output level we first highlight MENU and press select, then highlight SET AQUAPURE and press select. We can now use the up and down arrow keys to change the percentage to best fit our pools needs and press select to apply the settings.

Example:
Jandy Aqualink PDA-PS8 programming

Turning on/off your heater pump
Since we have already programmed our pool and spa temperatures, we now need to turn on the heat pump to get them to heat up. You can set these to go on at a certain time of day just like the pool pump by following the same steps but selecting POOL HEAT or SPA HEAT from the program menu. If you would like to turn these on/off manually here’s what you do; highlight EQUIPMENT ON/OFF and press select, then highlight HEAT PUMP and press select. This enables/disables the heat pump. Note: the HEAT PUMP uses the SET TEMP as a set point for the temperatures.

Example:
Jandy Aqualink PDA-PS8 programming

This covers just a few of the controls that the Aqua link PDA-PS8 can control. You can refer to your user’s manual for other configurations and operations.

For our Pentair Legend installation, our booster pump has 1-1/2” female line from our booster pump. This is what the Legend comes equipped to connect to. If you have to install your booster pump, refer to your manual or view our install guide here. So let’s get started…

As with most pool cleaners we’re going to install the twist lock pressure relief valve (wall fitting) first, be sure to disconnect your current cleaner, and run your pump for a minute or so to clear out the line. Now remove your current wall adapter from the wall fitting and screw in the provided adapter in by hand until tight. You should connect the hose to the wall fitting at the quick disconnect and turn a 1/4 turn to snug the wall fitting:

pentair legend diagram

Next is the hardest part of this installation, we are going to cut the feed hose to the right length. The hose comes in 5 sections covers 30 ft, which should be enough for most pools. The backup valve is 20” from the head cleaner and needs to remain at that distance.

So first take the feeder hose out of the box and we recommend unrolling the hose and letting it sit for a day in the sun to relax from being curled up in the box. Next, measure the depth of your pool with a telepole or the clear end of the feeder hose (usually this is where the grate or drain is at the bottom). Now cut the clear (soft) hose equal to the depth of your pool.

pentair legend diagram Example: the clear (soft) hose is 10ft. long, so if your pool is 8 ½ ft. deep, cut 1 ½ ft off. If your pool is deeper than 10 ft, don’t cut the hose.

Now we’re going to make the feed hose the right length for our pool, to do so we first attach the hose to the wall adapter and hold the opposite end of the hose and walk around the pool to find the farthest point without stretching the hose. Next measure the distance the hose extends past the furthest point of the pool, in the example below it is 71/2 ft. You’re going to cut this amount in egual parts (3 ¾ ft in our example) from the 10 ft lengths of white/grey hose on either side of the swivel.

Example:
pentair legend diagram

Once that is done your going to reattach the hoses using the mender nuts, an example is shown in figure 1. If done correctly the end of the 20 in. clear hose should just reach the farthest edge of the pool perimeter.

Example
pentair legend diagram
Using the mending nuts:
pentair legend diagram Note: Be sure not to cut floats and try to keep as many floats as possible on the white feed hose spaced evenly apart to hold the hose up on top of the water.

Now that you’ve been through all that, we lastly going to hook up the cleaning unit and turn it on. So we need to attach the hose to the cleaning unit, to do so put a extra mender nut on the legend mast, then push the clear (soft) hose gently over the mast about a ½”. Now turn the mender nut around the clear (soft) hose until tight, the backup valve should still be 20” from the head of the cleaner.

pentair legend diagram

Now take the bag out of the box (EU16) and twist it firmly onto the top of the throat opening over the rubber debris valve. We are just about done but let’s double check some important points:

White and clear hoses cut properly
Floats evenly spaces
Mender nuts tight around swivels, backup valve, mast and wall fitting
Make sure wall fitting is securely locked into place

Here is a example of how your unit should be assembled so far:
pentair legend diagram

Lastly go to your equipment and turn on the filter pump for 30 seconds to force the air out of the hose and then turn the booster pump on.

That’s it! If you would like to check the operation or do any fine tuning, please refer to your manual.

Polaris G3 pressure side swimming pool cleaner

The Zodiac Baracuda G3 swimming pool cleaner is easy to install on just about any pool, so let’s get started.

First were going to do some prep on the pool itself, we need to check to make sure there is nothing that can damage to pool liner (if installing in a vinyl pool) base or walls. Next, close the main drain to allow the flow to be controlled by the FlowKeeper. Now we need to vacuum the pool by hand so adjustments won’t have to be made later, also we need to clean the pool filter and skimmer/strainer baskets.

The pool return inlets need to be angled downward (this is crucial! Or your G3 will not move randomly through the pool). To adjust, loosen the lock ring and adjust the eyeball by hand to point downward, and then retighten the lock ring. If the eyeball is being stubborn, you can stick a screwdriver inside the eyeball and GENTLY pry downward to adjust. If you can’t adjust your inlets, then you must use Zodiac return line diverters.

Here is what your return inlets should be doing before adjusting:

Polaris G3 float position diagram

And after:

Polaris G3 float position diagram

Some pool return inlets have directional fittings or don’t have directional fittings, for these types we have the following options:

For Pools with return inlet directional fittings
Polaris G3 float position diagram Replace the Directional eyeball with the zodiac retrofit eyeball return line diverter, and then reinstall the eyeball retaining ring

You can find these items here:
Part# W90153 for 1 ½” return lines

Part# W90153 for 2” return lines

For Pools with return inlet directional fittings
Polaris G3 float position diagram Replace the Directional eyeball with the zodiac retrofit eyeball return line diverter, and then reinstall the eyeball retaining ring

You can find these items here:
Part# W24100

Next were going to assemble the cleaning unit, to start slide the finned disc over the foot pad so that it fits into the grooves and rotates freely on the foot pad. The fins on the disc face upward.

Polaris G3 float position diagram

We now need to install the wheel deflector; this is only used by some zodiac pool cleaners for proper performance. If your model includes one, slide the wheel over the extension pipe until the top clips of the wheel are seated in the groove and the wheel rotates freely.

Polaris G3 float position diagram

To assemble the hose we need to determine if your skimmer/vacuum fitting is located at the corner or center of the pool. Note: you may not need to use all your hose sections or may need more depending on your pool size

For corner or end Pools
Use enough hose sections to reach the farthest point, plus 1 section.
Polaris G3 float position diagram

For Center Pools
Use enough hose sections to reach the farthest point of the pool plus 2 sections
Polaris G3 float position diagram

Next we need to balance the cleaner with a weight to make sure the cleaner sits level on the pool floor, to do this you need to reference your manual to find your model number and place the weight according to the chart below:

Model Number:

W83251 - Hose weight is not needed for this model, but to prevent the cleaner from climbing the walls excessively snap 1 weight onto the first section of hose about 3 feet from the cleaner head
W03000 – Snap 1 hose weight onto the middle of the first hose section, the weight should be about a foot and a half away from the cleaner head
W83215 & W83216 – Snap 2 hose weights onto the middle of the second section, the weights should be about 4 and a half feet away from the head
Polaris G3 float position diagram

We need to remove the air from the hose, to do so turn your filter pump off, hold the cleaner head and hose underwater and attach the cleaner head to the female end of the hose. Now turn the pump on and fill the hose with water by placing the end over a return inlet.

Were almost done!

Now we need to attach the hose to our skimmer/vacuum line, to start we will explain how to install with a skimmer:

Using the parts below, choose a fitting combination that works best for your skimmer. Note: you may have parts left over. Then attach the hose protector net (C) to the hose section that sticks out of the skimmer. Now remove your skimmer basket and attach the Flowkeeper valve combination to the hose with the protector on it. You can now install into the skimmer as shown in example 1 or 2 and turn on the filter pump. Note: if you have multiple skimmers, use the skimmer that’s closest to the plumbing manifold.

Polaris G3 float position diagram

For installing with a dedicated vacuum line, it’s even easier:

We don’t need the Flowkeeper valve, so insert the male end of the hose into the large end of the 45 degree elbow. Then insert the 45 elbow into the vacuum lock and angle the elbow toward the pool surface. That’s it.

Polaris G3 float position diagram

Lastly we need to check the flow of water to make sure the cleaner will run properly, to do this we recommend you use 2 people so go grab a friend. 1 person should be at the plumbing manifold and the other should be pool side.

Once you’re in position, remove the cleaner head and attach the pool pulse to the end of the hose and keep it under water. Now turn the filter pump on, what we are going to be looking for is the blue indicator on the side of the pool pulse to be in the ideal range. This will differ depending on how many skimmers you have:

For pools with 1 skimmer, the flow is automatically regulate by the flowkeeper so make sure the blue indicator is in the ideal range

For pools with 2 or more skimmers, leave the selected skimmer open and slowly close the other(s) until the blue indicator is in the ideal range.

For pools with a wall vacuum fitting, leave the vacuum fitting fully open and slowly close the skimmer valve until the blue indicator is in the ideal range

Polaris G3 float position diagram

Keeping the hose under water, take off the pool pulse, submerge the cleaner head and attach after bubbles stop coming up from the extension pipe.

Your installation is now complete! For adjusting and troubleshooting please refer to your user’s manual.

For today’s project, were going to install the Pentair legend II, this specific unit does not require a booster pump so we will install it to our existing return line. So let’s get started…

First if you have an existing cleaner or wall fitting, take it out then turn on the filter pump to flush out the line for a minute and turn off the pump. Now remove the wall adapter from the wall fitting, next screw the adapter by hand to your dedicated return line. You should now be able to insert the the wall fitting (which is connected to the hose) into the wall adapter with a 1/4 turn which should be a snug fit. You can disconnect the same way.

pentair legend II diagram

Next we're going to check the pressure of the system to make sure we have adequate pressure to run the cleaner. Make sure the filter is clean before testing, and then connect the wall fitting with feeding hose to the wall adapter. For this next part you will need some ones help, so grab a friend and have them hold the pressure tester end of the hose underwater while you turn on the pump. With the line still underwater, have your assistant cover the large hole on the end of the line. Now you should go to the wall fitting and see if the pressure release valve it releasing water pressure, if so great, you have enough pressure. If not refer to the manual for help.

Now we’re going to get the hose to the proper length for our pool, out of the box the hose comes in 6 sections totaling 30 feet. To make your life easier you can roll out the hose and let it sit in the sun for 24 hours to let it relax but if not let’s keep moving. Attach the house to the wall adapter and gently pull the hose to the farthest point of the pool. If the hose reaches just to the furthest point without any excess, great we can move on but if it’s too long, you can mark it and cut it out of the first 6ft section closest to the wall. If you don’t have enough hose, refer to your manual for help.

Finally were ready to attach the cleaning unit! First remove the pressure tester from the end of the feeder hose by removing the nut; it’s a left hand nut so it turns the opposite way to loosen. Put the mender nut on the swivel mass and connect the feed hose to the mass and connect the mender nut and tighten. There should be no twist in the feeder hose after the connection. Now carefully twist lock the debris bag onto the top of the vacuum tube. Make sure there is a rubber debris valve is attached to the top of the Vacuum Tube before locking on the bag.

pentair legend II diagram pentair legend II diagram

You can now gently place the Legend II in the pool and turn on your pump, you should check the wheel RPM to make sure it’s in-between 25-32. For help with this and other fine tuning tip please refer to page 5 of your manual.

Congratulations now you can sit back and enjoy your Legend II.

Polaris 480 pressure side swimming pool cleaner
Polaris 480 pressure side swimming pool cleaner
Polaris 480 pressure side swimming pool cleaner
Polaris 480 pressure side swimming pool cleaner
Polaris 480 pressure side swimming pool cleaner

This installation of the Polaris 480 will be done using a pool with a dedicated return line with a 1-1/2” female fitting.

Before we get started, let’s flush out the return line by turning the pump on for a minute and then turn it off. Next, install the universal wall fitting (UWF), to do so, disconnect the UWF from the quick connect and screw it on to the fitting. Now re attach the quick disconnect by inserting it into UWF, turn clockwise and pull.

The next step involves adjusting the hose to the right length needed for your pool. With the hose connected to the pool at the return line, extend the hose out to the farthest point of the pool. The hose needs to reach within 6 inches longer or shorter of the farthest point. If the hose is too long, cut excess length from the first hose section and reconnect. If the hose is too short, you can purchase extensions by clicking here. After correct length is achieved, adjust the floats according to the diagram:

Polaris 480 float position diagram

To assemble the cleaner, attach the feed hose connector to the feed pipe by pressing until it locks. The filter bag is packaged in the collar area of the vacuum tube, pull out the bag and attach the clasp to the loop on the top of the bag and secure the Velcro strips. We now need to turn on the filter pump to prime before turning on the booster pump.

That’s it for assembly but we need to check to make sure our wheels are spinning the proper RPM. The manual states the 480 needs to operate between 32 and 36 RPM. To check yours, mark one wheel tire then turn the pump on and count the revolutions for a minute. If your count is outside the 32 – 36 range, refer to your manual for help.

That’s all there is to it! Your Polaris 480 should now be up and running, we still recommend you refer to the manual for maintenance tips and fine tuning to ensure your pool is cleaned as efficiently as possible.

Pool Cleaner Type Comparison

Suction side vs. Pressure side vs. Robotic Pool Cleaners
The ultimate pool cleaner comparison
Suction Side Cleaner:
How it works?
This type of cleaner attaches to your existing system on the suction side. Dirt and debris are sucked in directly and passed through your filter. The suction cleaner is the only one without come kind of filtration in the unit itself. On the other hand this style cleaner in the least expensive of the three.

Advantages
  • Creates more water passing through the filter then the pump alone
  • Suction cleaners often act as scrubbers as they move around the pool floor and walls
  • Most don’t require extra parts to connect to your current system, saving you money
  • The unit itself is inexpensive
Disadvantages
  • All debris is passed directly to your filter, which requires a better performance out of your current pump/filter.
  • With all debris going right to the filter you will have to clean the filter more
  • Not the best option if your pump/filter is not very efficient
Must run with pool pump to clean, also more chemicals might be needed in the long run due to larger amounts of water passing through the filter
Examples:
Pentair, Hayward Ultra, Barracuda, Hayward Navigator, Polaris
Suction side pool cleaner
Suction side pool cleaner
Suction side pool cleaner
Pressure Side Cleaner:
How it works?
These cleaners work off of pressure made by your pool pump or a separate booster pump. The pressure enables the cleaner to move around and collect debris and dirt. As these roll on wheels around the pool, they don’t have the same scrubbing ability as the suction or robotic type. This type is a somewhat middle ground in price of the three (depending on model).

Advantages
  • Includes its own filtration bag, putting less stress on your filter
  • Booster pumps allow for more powerful cleaning needs
  • Best for pools in areas were cleaning large debris is a must
  • The cleaner tail stirs up fine debris, resulting in more filtration
Disadvantages
  • May require a separate booster pump system, increasing overall costs
  • Some do not have the ability to filter very small debris through the built in bag
  • Cleaning on walls of the pool is not as effective
These also need pool pump to be running to clean and many require a separate booster pump, but can clean the pool faster. Also they help in filtering the water themselves.
Examples:
Polaris, Pentair Letro, Hayward
pressure side pool cleaner
pressure side pool cleaner
pressure side pool cleaner
Robotic Cleaner:
How it works?
This cleaner is fully contained, self sufficient machine. They are driven by their own motors and have another motor for vacuuming. Normally the use a long extension cord for power. Unlike the suction and pressure type, robotic cleaners need to be removed after cleaning is complete. Cost is also something that sets this cleaner apart from the rest but could save money in the long run not having to run your pump while in use. Also having a built in filter can prolong the life of your current filter.

Advantages
  • Extremely efficient at cleaning, especially small debris and leaves
  • Many will also clean the steps and waterline tile of your pool
  • Include a self contained filter
  • No extra stress is put on your current filter system
Disadvantages
  • Higher price, for the unit itself
  • Having to remove and insert the cleaner from the pool when needed
  • Might be excessive for your size pool
Robotic cleaners use less electricity not having to run with the pump, also no chemicals are lost through extra cycling of the water.
Examples:
Dolphin, Aqua Vac, Water Tech, Dirt Devil, SmartPool

Polaris 380 pressure side swimming pool cleaner
Polaris 380 pressure side swimming pool cleaner

Our Polaris 380 will be installed in a pool with a dedicated return line with a 1-1/2” female fitting, which is what’s recommended for easiest install.

The first step is to flush out the return line by turning the pump on for a minute and then turn it off. Next, install the universal wall fitting (UWF), to do so, disconnect the UWF from the quick connect and screw it on to the fitting with the blue restrictor plate. Now re attach the quick disconnect by inserting it into UWF, turn clockwise and pull.

The next step involves adjusting the hose to the right length needed for your pool. First attach the leader hose to the feed hose. Now connect the feed hose end to the return line on the pool wall. Now, extend the hose out to the farthest point of the pool, the hose needs to reach within 6 inches longer or shorter of the farthest point. If the hose is too long, cut equal amounts from the 10ft sections in the feed hose. If the hose is too short, you can purchase extensions by clicking here. After correct length is achieved, adjust the floats according to the diagram:

There’s 2 ways to test your pool water, you can use a test kit or test strips. The test kit is the traditional way of testing your pool water by filling up the container and adding a certain amount of drops to see the color change in the water to indicated the chemical levels. The new way to test is using test strips and in some cases a digital reader to see your levels. While test strips are much easier to use and reduce the risk of error on your part, some say they are not as precise. But with the ease of use and easier readability, the test strips are the choice of more and more pool owners.

As always, with any test kit, read the instructions carefully and follow them when testing to make sure you get a accurate reading.

First we should breakdown the types of test kits that are available:
OTO (orthotolidine) test
The OTO would be considered the old school testing method out of the testing kits and since the introduction of DPD kits, these kits aren’t used as much anymore. They use a solution that turns the water yellow. The darker it gets the more chlorine is released in the water. A benefit to the OTO test is that it will not *bleach out if your chlorine level is way too high.

DPD Colorimertic test
This is a common test kit that uses 2 chemicals to test the water; the solution in the DPD will turn the water a reddish color that gets darker when there are higher levels of chlorine. If there is a excessive amount of chlorine (about 25 – 30 ppm and higher) the sample will *bleach out and look clear.

    Example kits:
           Taylor K-2004 kit

An addition to the DPD test, you can also use a DPD titration test to get a very precise readying of the chlorine in your pool. This test is used to demonstrate your chlorine level to meet state pool codes that may apply in your area.

    Example kits:
           Taylor K-2005 kit

The other method of testing your water is to use test strips that read your pool’s chlorine level:
Test strips
Aquachek trutest digital test strips The chlorine test strips use the same technology as the test strips that are used by medical services use for testing blood and urine. The test strips are claimed to be at the least, as reliable as the test kits. But due to the usability of the strips for the average homeowner, the margin of error is reduced as opposed to using chemical drops. The test strips are dipped in the water and change color and you can read your chlorine level on the chart or use a digital reader that tells you what the chlorine level is.

    Example kits:
AquaChek Yellow Test Strips 4-1 Chlorine
           Nature 2 Test Strips

The Zodiac Baracuda G4 swimming pool cleaner is easy to install on just about any pool, so let’s get started.

First were going to do some prep on the pool itself, we need to check to make sure there is nothing that can damage the pool liner (if installing in a vinyl pool) base or walls.

Or your G4 will not move randomly through the pool).

Polaris G4 float position diagram

And after:

Polaris G4 float position diagram

Some pool return inlets have directional fittings or don’t have directional fittings, for these types we have the following options:

For Pools with return inlet directional fittings
Polaris G4 float position diagram Replace the Directional eyeball with the zodiac retrofit eyeball return line diverter, and then reinstall the eyeball retaining ring

You can find these items here:
Part# W90153 for 1 ½” return lines

Part# W90153 for 2” return lines

For Pools with return inlet directional fittings

You can find these items here:
Part# W24100

Next were going to assemble the cleaning unit, to start slide the finned disc over the foot pad so that it fits into the grooves and rotates freely on the foot pad. The fins on the disc face upward.

Polaris G4 float position diagram

We now need to install the wheel deflector; this is only used by some zodiac pool cleaners for proper performance. If your model includes one, slide the wheel over the extension pipe until the top clips of the wheel are seated in the groove and the wheel rotates freely.

Polaris G4 float position diagram

To assemble the hose we need to determine if your skimmer/vacuum fitting is located at the corner or center of the pool. Note: you may not need to use all your hose sections or may need more depending on your pool size

For corner or end Pools
Use enough hose sections to reach the farthest point, plus 1 section.
Polaris G4 float position diagram

For Center Pools
Use enough hose sections to reach the farthest point of the pool plus 2 sections
Polaris G4 float position diagram

Polaris G4 float position diagram

Polaris G4 float position diagram

For installing with a dedicated vacuum line, it’s even easier:

We don’t need the Flowkeeper valve, so insert the male end of the hose into the large end of the 45 degree elbow. Then insert the 45 elbow into the vacuum lock and angle the elbow toward the pool surface. That’s it.

Polaris G4 float position diagram

Keeping the hose under water, take off the pool pulse, submerge the cleaner head and attach after bubbles stop coming up from the extension pipe.

Your installation is now complete! For adjusting and troubleshooting please refer to your user’s manual.

Why Use Nature 2 In Your Spa

nature2 spa treatment First off, what is Nature2?
Nature2 is a spa purification system made by zodiac that uses minerals to reduce the use of chemicals dramatically. Most of us have been in a spa with way too much chemical in it at one point, so we know how much of a problem this can be. With the Nature2 you don’t have to worry about burning eyes or irritated skin that can ruin your experience.
"Another inexpensive option is Nature2, a system that delivers trace amounts of silver to kill bacteria and trace amounts of copper to fight algae. The unit is housed in a plastic cartridge and, according to Buzz Robinson, a training manager with Zodiac Pool Care, the Vista, Calif.-based company that manufactures the system, chlorine consumption can be reduced by 50 to 80 percent. A Nature2 unit for a pool with up to 25,000 gallons of water would run a homeowner about $180 for one swimming season, according to Mr. Robinson. Cartridges last six months..."
May 29, 2008
-The New York Times
How does it help my spa?
Technically speaking, the Nature2 uses minerals found in nature such as zinc and silver with an oxidizer to sanitize the water. When used in your current spa you can reduce the use of chemicals between 50% - 80%. If you wanted to completely get rid of a chlorine sanitizing system all together; you can use the Nature2 cense MPS along with the Nature2 sanitizer, you now have the only EPA approved non-chlorine system. Not only is this important to your spa but the environment as well. Using natural minerals eliminates the need for harsh chemicals.
